Smut, Gen, Angst, Fluff, Anything, Everything. PFL era, Post war, Pre Canon, AU, whichever Brackets or Prose whatever you're comfortable with Tag and go, baby!
The food tastes better too. He thinks it's his imagination, wishful thinking, but it doesn't matter. It might as well be caviare and steak with how much he enjoys it. They've outdone themselves, and the conversation with York, light fun things like they used to, is the best part of it.
It's a good meal. It's good company. The food is fucking fantastic and the beer is cold and hoppy and it's just- it doesn't feel like he's been on the run forever. It doesn't feel like they've lost more or less a decade to the thing that ruined both of them. It feels like they're just two guys on a date in a low key place and that? that's worth everything.
Bitters even clears their plates when they're done but tells them not to move just yet. What the hell.
They could be anywhere. Could be anywhere other than this backwater planet in the middle of a war zone. They could be back in the project before things went bad. Wash laughs more freely than he has as long as he can remember. York is just like he remembers him.
"That bad." He snorts a laugh. "He apparently thought if you want to bake something you need extra baking powder. And got the sugar swapped with the salt. Worst. Muffins. Ever."
But he'd tried and that- that was pretty damn sweet. Almost as sweet as Jensen swinging by with two mugs of coffee and fresh forks and- chocolate. He smells chocolate. Rich and dark and- "...what have you been up to?"
"Nothing sirs!" Chipper as anything as she swings back to her table and there's Smith with a very small but well iced chocolate cake.
"...wow, and I thought some of the food we had in the project was bad." That is impressively bad. But it said something that he'd tried at all.
The smell of chocolate hits him, almost a physical feeling. It makes his mouth water, and he stares when they bring the cake out, just enough for two.
"Oh my god." He feels guilty that they're so invested in this, not that there's a whole lot of fun to go around these days. He promises he'll make it up to them sometime. He'll make it up to all of them. Somehow.
"...if you think this is getting you guys out of the tactical drills tomorrow-" Smith waves him off before returning to his table. Okay. Not kissing up. just- genuinely invested. He's hit hard by the memories of his old unit- of all the shit and help they gave each other between deployments. How they became family to him.
One week here and he's already gone for these kids. He'll just have to double down on the training, do whatever he can to make sure they make it out alive.
"This is. Wow. Really. I did not ask them to do this I swear."
"They're good kids," Wash says, glancing over at that as they continue their meal. They try and avoid looking like they're staring and don't really succeed. It's sweet.
"I believe you. I guess we are the prime entertainment around here too."
"They really are." Trying so hard to help him do this thing that probably won't work out- none of his relationships ever do and it's been too long but he's not thinking about any of that. He's just- enjoying the moment, slicing a bite of cake and hefting it on his fork, holding it up for Wash with a smile. "Then let's be entertaining."
"I do like a good performance." He opens his mouth to let York feed him the chunk of cake. It's good. Not too sweet, just right. And gooey, melts on his tongue.
"Cut me a bite and I will." He lifts his brows, grinning at how Wash's eyes light up. Sugar really was the best way to win the kid over back in the day and maybe he used that knowledge to his advantage. maybe. More than a little, really.
York leans in and takes his bite off the fork, sighing with another obscene moan. God. Chocolate. How long has it been since he last had chocolate? "...Know what? I'm dumping you and marrying Smith. This is amazing."
"Wow, not even a full date and I'm already being ditched. That has to be some kind of record," Wash says, and leans in to brush a smear of chocolate from around York's mouth with his thumb.
"I dunno, can you bake like this?" He turns his head, eyes on Wash as his tongue darts out to lap up that chocolate from his skin, grin just on this side of wicked. This he knows how to do. How to flirt, how to tease. It's familair ground.
"Cross my heart." Yes, he asked for it. And he's damn pleased by it. Someone- he's not sure who, shuffles the rest of the kids out of the mess like they're about to go at it on the table- which isn't entirely impossible but no.
York finishes off his half of the cake lazily, settling back in a slouch that he knows has the shirt riding up on his abs while he sips his coffee. "Too much to handle. Both of us."
Wash is not at all subtle about his staring. York hasn't lost any tone since the project. He's built and Wash's gaze lingers over his abs, the flat planes of his stomach that he can see. "Surprised they let us out without a hose turned on us."

Holy shit.

He cuts a little slice of cake and holds it up to York's lips.
