"I do not like that I lost it around them, no. I don't think it'll happen again, I've been keeping up with my treatment." He shrugs, settling back on the sofa. "Nah. My cousins are all happy to throw a punch. I just don't wanna break their arms on accident if they try."
Treatment? That earns a puzzled look, before her expression clears. "You would not break mine," she points out with a hum. "Though I would have to restrain my strength in turn. But I understand. It is hard to come back from war to those who have only ever known a peaceful life."
Something to protect as much as it is envy. Or destroy, depending on your temperament.
"You're also very good about not setting me off." Which is really strange and really, really relaxing. To not have to worry about that. Not everyone was so considerate.
But she was right, they had time. He had time. "Have not made any headway in the 'get Carolina unbound from the building' project but I did find some interesting notes on glamour? So when we get that getting you out and about thing sorted you can probably not draw too much attention if you don't want."
Considerate, or planned? She is, after all, a demon. They aren't exactly known for compassion.
Then again, what do books written by mortals really know?
"I can use it, if required." Her tone indicates some disinterest, however, as her hand lifts and drags her fingers before her face. A face that. Vanishes. Along with the rest of her. Maxine the cat floats above the couch on her invisible lap curl-perch.
Then she returns with a shimmer and a faint whaft of smoke that's gone as soon as it arrives. "Or I can veil myself."
Okay that. That was cool. That had him blinking at the space where she was for a long moment and-
Pouting?
pouting.
"I could go to my classes and not get bothered if I could do that." Sitting in the back with a hood up helped a little, but people STILL wanted to talk to him. About his eye and shit. Christ.
"You are human." Which is not to say invisibility will be beyond him some day - just probably not in time for graduation. "Are your peers truly so bothersome? Or need you to find better company?"
"The ones in my classes, yeah." It's irritating. "Guys at the library, not so much. And there's some girls I jog with so other dudes don't bug 'em, they're sweet."
"Then why are you telling them the truth?" Assuming he says anything at all. "Tell false tales and let them fall over themselves to determine which one is real."
Then a frown. "It sounds like few things change across centuries." Tsk, harassment. Perhaps it IS a good thing she's apartment-bound.
"Last time they asked I told them I fought a bear. It led to some interesting scrutiny." More often than not he ignores them. Tries to ignore them. He's got better things to deal with.
"I wanna say we've gotten better- and in some ways we have. In a lot of others? We've gotten worse." He's not proud of that.
Bears. Riiiight. "Once learning is complete, you will still suffer scrutiny elsewhere," she points out with the flick of her claws. "So deal with children as best you must. And they are just that," she adds thoughtfully, "children. Learning to deal with them will make dealing with 'adults' of your species -somewhat- easier."
Not guaranteed of course. There's a shrug. "So it goes across time, even if some patterns cannot fail to be repeated."
"Adults know well enough not to ask stupid questions." He says, knowing damn well he too asks plenty of stupid questions now and then. Especially when he doesn't understand. But the follow up usually isn't as fucking stupid.
That gets a derisive snort. "Then you do not know many adults. There are plenty in any world that do not know not to ask a question even a child would not think to raise."
But none of this is going to help in their short term. "Cold trails are better left unfollowed. You have a video to research, do you not?"
"I can multitask." he gestures to the tablet in his hands(a new one, she's kept the one he gave her and that's kind of awesome) with a stylus. After a moment there's a little ping from the college chat client and he actually- goes a little pink.
Oh ho. Now that's interesting. Kitty cat's ears are ruffled again as Carolina resumes her lounge pose. She can wait. She'll learn in due course. "And what task have you for me, then?"
"You caught up on History?" His tasks are usually just- prompting her to educate herself. Not that she really needs much prompting. There's another little ping and his smile goes positively sappy.
She doesn't look impressed, but amusement remains. "You are decidedly twitterpated. Or should I be concerned by that flush of colour? Find a doctor for you, perhaps."
"Yeah! I haven't really dated in...awhile. A long while. Um. Wow it's been awhile." This will be good. It'll be fun. "You're on your own for dinner tonight, okay? And...maaaaybe I'll end up bringing them back here? If I do we'll keep to my room, promise."
"Well you have had an eventful life time," the demon points out, before lips twist into a smirk. "You had best leave me a good dinner, then. And a tale to tell when you are done."
She doesn't seem to doubt at all that time would be spent in his room - she never goes in there, and doesn't seem bothered by the offer for him and his potential guest to seclude themselves away.
"What do you want? I can pick up some of that Thai you liked from a week ago or- Anything really. Name it and I'll grab it for you. Only fair." Kissing and telling isn't usually his bag but- who's Carolina gonna tell? No one.
Claws tap against her lips. The Thai food had been pretty great. "Spicy. But something new," she requests at last, letting her wings shrug rather than her shoulders. "We've only gone through half of your menu list, have we not?"
"Spicy but new. Can do." Updating her on what's available by way of food has been something of an adventure. He tended to get whatever was cheap and filling but with Carolina he's sort of started branching out more. Being able to afford better has helped a lot. Having someone to eat with? Helped more.
There's another little ping and his smile lights up like a supernova. "I DO in fact have a date tonight, HELL yeah!"
