"Last time they asked I told them I fought a bear. It led to some interesting scrutiny." More often than not he ignores them. Tries to ignore them. He's got better things to deal with.
"I wanna say we've gotten better- and in some ways we have. In a lot of others? We've gotten worse." He's not proud of that.
Bears. Riiiight. "Once learning is complete, you will still suffer scrutiny elsewhere," she points out with the flick of her claws. "So deal with children as best you must. And they are just that," she adds thoughtfully, "children. Learning to deal with them will make dealing with 'adults' of your species -somewhat- easier."
Not guaranteed of course. There's a shrug. "So it goes across time, even if some patterns cannot fail to be repeated."
"Adults know well enough not to ask stupid questions." He says, knowing damn well he too asks plenty of stupid questions now and then. Especially when he doesn't understand. But the follow up usually isn't as fucking stupid.
That gets a derisive snort. "Then you do not know many adults. There are plenty in any world that do not know not to ask a question even a child would not think to raise."
But none of this is going to help in their short term. "Cold trails are better left unfollowed. You have a video to research, do you not?"
"I can multitask." he gestures to the tablet in his hands(a new one, she's kept the one he gave her and that's kind of awesome) with a stylus. After a moment there's a little ping from the college chat client and he actually- goes a little pink.
Oh ho. Now that's interesting. Kitty cat's ears are ruffled again as Carolina resumes her lounge pose. She can wait. She'll learn in due course. "And what task have you for me, then?"
"You caught up on History?" His tasks are usually just- prompting her to educate herself. Not that she really needs much prompting. There's another little ping and his smile goes positively sappy.
She doesn't look impressed, but amusement remains. "You are decidedly twitterpated. Or should I be concerned by that flush of colour? Find a doctor for you, perhaps."
"Yeah! I haven't really dated in...awhile. A long while. Um. Wow it's been awhile." This will be good. It'll be fun. "You're on your own for dinner tonight, okay? And...maaaaybe I'll end up bringing them back here? If I do we'll keep to my room, promise."
"Well you have had an eventful life time," the demon points out, before lips twist into a smirk. "You had best leave me a good dinner, then. And a tale to tell when you are done."
She doesn't seem to doubt at all that time would be spent in his room - she never goes in there, and doesn't seem bothered by the offer for him and his potential guest to seclude themselves away.
"What do you want? I can pick up some of that Thai you liked from a week ago or- Anything really. Name it and I'll grab it for you. Only fair." Kissing and telling isn't usually his bag but- who's Carolina gonna tell? No one.
Claws tap against her lips. The Thai food had been pretty great. "Spicy. But something new," she requests at last, letting her wings shrug rather than her shoulders. "We've only gone through half of your menu list, have we not?"
"Spicy but new. Can do." Updating her on what's available by way of food has been something of an adventure. He tended to get whatever was cheap and filling but with Carolina he's sort of started branching out more. Being able to afford better has helped a lot. Having someone to eat with? Helped more.
There's another little ping and his smile lights up like a supernova. "I DO in fact have a date tonight, HELL yeah!"
She's been fairly receptive to the different foods of this era - pizza had taken a little convincing until York realised her preference for spice and heat in her food, and after that, crazy toppings had been welcome. Whatever he chose would be edible, at least, and that was the important part. "Good," she approves of his happiness in this respect, the success of his lure. " Should I expect to see much of this individual, or will that depend on tonight's outcome?"
"Depends on how tonight goes. I don't wanna take a risk if it's not a sure thing." Sure there might be some people that'd believe him but- it's not a talk he wants to have unless he's positive they won't make trouble for Carolina. And for him, but mostly her.
"You need not worry that I might interfere - this does not affect our contract." Yet. Always later. But she does not appear particularly concerned. "Most mortals cannot see me as it is. It would not take much to remain hidden by the Veil, and you have granted me room here."
And if there IS risk, well. They won't see her coming for them. That's good too, right?
"Most? That feels like something I should ask about but- I need to shower and shave and knock out more research before I go pick her up." Jessica, tall, blonde, leggy, stupid smart and kind of shy. He will probably need to grab them reservations somewhere nice ish?j Yeah.
"Other Gifted. And those not quite so mortal." Who knows who else might be hiding in plain sight of you, York? "Your progress means soon you'll start to see that which was hidden from you before in not too long."
And she'll have to teach him to hide what he is as well. Safety of her pact partner comes first, after all. They can't continue decades of dinner if he dies before dessert.
"And other gifted and not so mortal will be able to see me?" He might wanna work on that. Being the mythology guy is one thing. Being the MAGIC guy? That...is gonna be a pain in the ass.
Oh well.
Shower, shave, lay out clothes. Gonna go do that now. He gives the cat a scritch of the ears and Carolina a crooked smile before slipping into his bedroom to start the aforementioned showering and shaving.
"Those that exist walk amongst you, or live alongside unnoticed. Most humans have some glimmer of power, but it often goes unnoticed. Not enough to use, or train. But you've been developing your skill now. You will stand out a little more."
Had likely stood out a great deal as a child - though binding his power? Hmm, well. "Given you're a male with power, some will no doubt try to test your strength. Or.." She raises her voice a little, wickedly teasing. "Watch out, or you'll likely find yourself fending off covens of witches." Who'll find his body an attractive package to his more attractive abilities.
York with a harem. Well, wouldn't be the first time she had a pact with someone that had one of those.
"You mean for providing a strong bloodline?" He pokes his head out of the bathroom, foam still on his face, razor in hand. "That sounds like a really weird problem to have."
Being chased for being strong. That sounds kinda hot. Also like a hassle. "How would I ever know if they liked me for ME?" He mock whines, resuming his slow, careful motions of the razor over his throat.
