He shivers at that look, the intensity of it. It's a raw expression, a little haunted. "Because... because we're not the people that we were back then," Wash says, giving a little shrug and ducking his head so he can look away. "Because I lied and I- I hurt you. Would have hurt you."
"You told the truth when it mattered. You gave me enough info to make the truce possible. You both gave me time and backup to get us out of there." He pulls himself up, nosing up the line of Wash's torso- and he pulls Carolina along with him. Tugs her close and tangles them all together.
It would be nice to say that it had been for purely noble reasons. But mainly it had been York himself. Coming back, still himself, not the shells that they'd become. How could he have wished that on him?
He shivers, slides his arms around York, and then Carolina is curled up against them too and that feels perfect.
"What was it like? In the suit?" he asks, a little afraid of the answer. "Kept hearing about it. Saw it a couple of times." It creeped him out honestly.
"...Without D it'd feel like wearing his skin." Maine's. The Meta's. It wouldn't have felt right. With Delta it was...it fit. They belonged in there, even if the helmet still felt weird. "But with him...knowing I had to get it to keep both of you safe? I felt a little like I did when I first put on the Freelancer Armor. Unstoppable."
The most powerful thing in the room. It's- a little intoxicating. He'll have to be careful. The most important thing isn't even the suit. It was Delta. Working together like that again. Having Wash and Carolina at his back like before the leaderboard. "Kinda miss my old helmet though. I feel so exposed."
Wash glances over towards where it's piled up, waiting. "It's weird seeing it," Wash admits. "I really thought it was him for a moment when you came fort me." He'd thought that he was dead, or insane. Or that somehow the Meta had survived and was coming after him.
"I remember that. Trading the standard issue stuff for the armour... felt like I could do anything."
"It feels strange." Not as strange as seeing the scraped up remnants of Norths' armor. Or seeing Tex's helmet. It'd been like a fucking graveyard in there. But here and now with the family he's got left, he's happy. "But...I needed it. If I was gonna get you out of there."
"We wore our armour like a second skin," Carolina points out. "I'm not surprised it felt strange." She wasn't sure if she'd ever get used to seeing York wearing Maine's armour.
"You did it," Wash says. "We're out. We'll take them down and then..." He could have a life, maybe. Maybe he'd get to keep it."
"I need to learn how to brawl like him." The name, the image will do the rest of the work for him. It's a little like honoring what's left. And using it to stab the Chairman in the eye.
Then... "Beach house." He tips his head up, kissing the underside of Wash's Jaw. Twisting around to do the same to Carolina takes some doing but- it's appropriate. "Surfing."
"A hammock, a huge fridge just for beer, a surfboard, and both of you in bikinis all damn day." That's enough for him. More than enough. If he's got them to take care of- he'll be happy.
That... that is new. He glances between them, eyes wide when Carolina grabs his ass, squeezing it. Their relationship has never been sexual, even if they're closer now than they were in the project, probably more comfortable with physical contact. It isn't that Carolina isn't hot either. But this is just...
He stares for a moment when Carolina kisses York, and for a moment there's the thought that he should leave them to it. He knows that York had been gone for Carolina during the Project. And now they can be together. It makes his own feelings seem paltry by comparison. It was easy to confess love when you thought you were going to die. Easy to say it when your friend had just been mind-fucked and wanted to die. And Carolina has never been interested in him.
York kisses his neck and it feels so good. "I can leave you guys together if you want."
He lets York move him so he has to meet his eyes, even though it's awkward as hell to do that and he is so uncertain about what this even means. He doesn't want to be a third wheel, or someone they share out of sympathy. He doesn't think they would, but there's nothing in his life that is certain anymore.
And Carolina is agreeing with York. He hadn't thought... But maybe it doesn't matter right now. Just for now. And then when everything is fixed as much as it can be, they can figure things out. "Okay," he says quietly. "Be kind of awkward anyway since the door's locked and we're under house arrest and there's only one bed."
"Yeah we're not gonna make you go shower or something while we do whatever. That'd be rude." He leans in to nip at Wash's chin, Carolina echoing the bite on the side of his neck and -oh.
"Mm. okay we need to decide who's in the middle for this." One bed. One SMALL bed. Three horny freelancers. They might need to move to the floor.
"Think we used up all the hot water anyway," Wash replies, managing a small smile and then... York nips at him, and Carolina is looking at him in a way that he's never seen her look before. It's overwhelming honestly. But a good kind. Mostly good kind. Even if part of him is ready to crawl into a hole and hide.
He pulls away a little, dragging himself upright. "We're really doing this? It seems kind of... sudden. Can't deny it'd be nice to burn off some of the adrenaline."
"Well. You know we're all pretty shit at talking about things but I think we can talk afterward? We'll have time." For now there's Wash and Carolina and all the skin he wants to touch, all the hands he wants to feel. To treat well- to treat better than Hargrove.
Wash sits up and that's a perfect opportunity to nuzzle his way along his thigh, utterly shameless.
"If we were better at talking, a lot of stuff could probably have been avoided a long time ago," Wash says wryly. If North and South had talked, if things had been disclosed, if he'd believed in Connie more.
Any thoughts that he had are shoved firmly out of his mind when York nuzzles along his leg right to the juncture of his hip. "Fuck. That is not playing fair."
"Mmm. Point. Clair, what do you think?" He doesn't stop nuzzling, doesn't stop tugging Wash's waistband down enough to nip at the skin of his hip. Carolina sits back thoughtfully, watching York wind Wash up.
Wash whimpers, too tired to even try hiding his reactions right now. York is so close and his body starts to react despite everything. "Caroilina..." Wash says, giving her a pleading look, because they either need to agree or York needs to stop teasing him before he's too far gone.
"We talk now," Carolina says, although she sounds reluctant. "Just the basics. Saves hurt feelings later."

Behind him he can feel Carolina nodding. They've lost so much and they probably should talk about this first but- both. Both or nothing at all."
