Personality: York works infiltration and decryption for a reason- he's curious. He's insanely curious about people, about organizations, and especially about puzzles. People are just as puzzling as any decryption and he tries to sort out what pattern of behavior gets the best result. At first brush it's being a friendly, harmless dude bro kinda bro and honestly? It's easy because York is nothing if not laid back and a bit of a dude bro under the military training and paranoia. It's something of an obfuscating tactic because the more harmless and amusing he seems, the less likely people are to believe that he is in fact an infiltration specialist. The less likely they are to look too close into who he is and what he's done or ask questions. Oh it's just this dude, no worries, and move along. It comes part from the paranoia that he earned while in and after Project Freelancer, and part of it was from growing up emulating the other kids in school that were well liked and popular. If he was like every other kid they wouldn't ask after his family or ask why he was peeking into the school records.

His curiosity and tenancy to hide what he's thinking/feeling/observing doesn't make him a dishonest individual- he's a terrible liar. Sure, theft and peeking where he probably shouldn't to satisfy his curiosity and/or boredom might be a dishonest action but he tells the truth when prompted or evades. Outright lying isn't easy for him and makes him uncomfortable, he fumbles with it till he's called on it, and even then it's something of a relief. Coming clean, not so much, but not having to lie. The dishonesty and manipulation of the Project plays into this as an adult, but as a kid the secrecy surrounding the Human Covenant war probably left a bad taste in his mouth in the first place.

Even with how shady the war began and how shady the project was, York's got a strong sense of loyalty to his people- to his CO and to his fellow soldiers. Enough to follow Tex (who injured him or took part in his loss of his eye) to what ultimately was his death. His desire to do right by them when he wasn't able to in the past overrules logic. Literally. Delta didn't think it wise but he pushed through, ignoring the recommendation of the AI for what he felt to be the right thing to do. Call it bravery, nobility, or stupidity, it can all be just about the same.

Canon Powers: His stunning good looks and charming personality!

Game powers: 3 Slightly Badass Powers:

Probability Manipulation: "Hey, I'd rather be lucky than good any day." York's able to nudge the odds in his favor subconsciously in little ways with a moderate payoff. Being in the right place at the right time, making that wild shot, getting help at the last second, ect. Actively focusing for a big push of something crazy working out has a 50/50 chance of turning out for the better- or blowing up in his face. The longer the odds of a favorable outcome? The more focus it requires and bigger the blowup if he fails critically.

Kinetic Charging: "I don't know, have we got any nukes?" Exactly that, York can charge anything, big or small, with a finite amount of explosive energy. The bigger the item? The less powerful the explosion. Smaller? More power, relatively. Charging a car would pop like a firecracker without doing more than scratching the paint, charging a marble? About the same concussive force as a flashbang and disintegrate the marble completely.

Hypnotic Charm: "Hey there Carolina, if I said I like your armor, would you hold it against me?" York is a personable and charming kinda guy. The hypnotic charm isn't enough to send someone into a daze or a fugue, but just enough to make them wanna hear him out, go along with his ideas (crazy or non) or give what he's saying some thought. It makes people want to agree with him more than they might otherwise, want to help him out a little if he asks, etc.

Abilities: York is a highly trained infiltration specialist and military operative, having fought through and survived a war and lived off the radar (for the most part) while being actively hunted by a shady military organization. Some of it's luck, most of it? Training.

Infiltration: Brought into the project specifically to fill this role, York is skilled in stealth, lockpicking (conventional bolt and tumbler locks, holographic locks, encrypted locks), and circumnavigating security systems. He can get in (eventually) almost anywhere and get out just as well, more or less undetected depending upon mission parameters. Sometimes there are explosions. It's, uh. Not always his fault.

Encryption/Decryption/Coding: Part natural aptitude, part practice, and part assistance from Delta, York can handle complicated encryption and the moderate hacking that goes hand and hand with working around security systems and picking encrypted/holographic locks. Decrypting data is something that takes him a bit of time to pick at but, like most puzzles, he gets there eventually.

Combat: As a part of a highly competitive special ops military organization, York ranked number 2 consistently (until the incident with his eye knocked him down, but he recovered quickly) on PFL's leaderboard, second only to the untouchable Carolina- then third to the doubly so Tex. Skilled in the use of mid to close range firearm, martial arts, cudgel sticks and a lot of bar brawling bs he picked up cuz it looked fun, York knows his way around a fight, even if he's down an eye.

Driving: York can handle most land vehicles in chaotic situations without crashing and dying. High speed chases, evasion, even handling a highway battle between himself and his squadmates while being pursued by jetpack wearing enemies while steering clear of oncoming traffic and gunshots. Due to a delinquent past he can also probably hotwire most cars but that's something he hasn't had to do in awhile.

Setting: Once he gets over the not being shot up thing and has time to look over the stakes- York will be on board 110%. It's what he'd thought he signed up for in the military in the first place, what he'd been told he was doing with the project: Working for the greater good. Fighting to protect people, working to make something to help fellow soldiers. To be a part of something bigger than himself. To be a hero. While Project Freelancer left him disillusioned as hell a genuine opportunity to work in a team to protect people?

To fight against something that is unquestionably evil? To be a good guy? He'll take that chance with both hands. He'd take it as a chance to atone for following so blindly for so long in the Project, and that I think will do a lot in the long term to assuage the guilt he still carries around over his part in how things went down.

The Locksmith- [ Ok, he's smirking a little, he can't help it, he's a fucking super hero now. What's not to smirk about? ] Journal entry zero zero zero. Starting from scratch here future me. I hope you can look back without kicking yourself this time. It all seems kinda- you know- familiar. Big stakes, save the world, save the universe, be a good guy. A real good guy. Maybe you'll look back at this and wonder why we bought into it, maybe it's one big mistake or we'll have fucked things up again but...I'm choosing to be optimistic.

I mean we can't do much worse than we have already, right? Nowhere to go but up. This isn't new. War's war, war sucks but this Legion seems legit. We've thought that before, I know. Marines! Legit. Project Freelancer! Legit. Sticking it out on our own! Not legit but, yeah. Not exactly productive either. Last thing we did before-

[ He falters a little, here. Reaches up to rub at his left shoulder, wincing. ]

Before. Well. You know what happened. It was to try and make things right. We aren't really gonna get another shot like that back home. And this? This is a chance on a silver platter.

So if the work gets tedious or things start getting complicated or you get annoying partners or you start to forget that this isn't where we've always been or meant to be- think back to when you'd thought you'd been doing right only to figure out, hey! Not so much. And look at whatever you're doing when you're watching this. Saving kids, fighting off evil. Being a super hero. People don't get second chances like this. We sure as hell don't deserve it but- you know that. Just don't forget it.

Additional info: Not quite an inventory item, power, or ability- The Implanted AI Fragment Delta is a big part of York as a character at the chosen canonpoint as they've shared a brain for roughly five years (what is the RVB timeline, I don't even know, they don't have exact dates I'm so sorry). He helps compensate for York's bum eye, assists in encryption/decryption, working locks, and generally helps keep York level. Sort of like a live in lovechild of Mr. Spock and Clippy except a highly illegal bit of military equipment that's a fragment of a living man's personification of logic. It's complicated. York can function and work without Delta in the game if he's not allowed, but he would be more stable and better able to adjust if he had the AI.

History: Clicky the linky

Aspirations: To survive comfortably. Mostly comfortably, at least that's how he'd like it to look. Under it all York wants to do the right thing. To be the good guy that he thought he was in the Project until it came about that he wasn't all that good. All he wanted to do was make a difference in the war effort and maybe have kids with green eyes with Carolina but that didn't pan out and then he got shot. So. Living. Living is good. Living RIGHT is better than living comfortably.

Fears: Being taken advantage of again, being a tool. He's already died (when he figures that out it'll be fun) so he doesn't have much fear about that or isolation, but failing to protect the people he cares about and being a tool of a malevolent force terrifies him. he fell for it once, he could again and it's left him paranoid.

Inventory: Power armor, shotgun, side arm, a couple of clips of ammo for each, his built in healing unit

Magic: Teleportation

Reason: There's a lot in York's life that would've gone different if he was able to just be somewhere else at a particular moment. The loss of his eye, Carolina getting dropped off the cliff, being shot by Wyoming. That little extra nudge would'e been the difference between success and failure in the past. Having it now would make him an invaluable asset in the war against the Nox.

Paragraph: So this was new.

Waking up in the armor? Not new. Waking up alone in his head? That was new. And new, in his line of work, was frightening. No attempt at rousing the dormant AI he swore was there when he'd passed out did anything. It wasn't until he finally cracked the seal on his helmet (stupid, should've check to see if the air was breathable) and reached back to run his fingers over his neural port and found it scabbed over and empty that it clicked.

He'd lost Delta. The one thing he'd done right, the ONE JOB he'd had left, and D was gone. Just like that the rest of the op, a shitshow from the start, came rushing back. The lock. Tex. The teleporter (he hated those things they always felt WEIRD when he went through them no matter how well they worked and visions of Iowa ran through his head) and the firefight after.

Tex's gun jamming.

Two bullet wounds to the upper left torso and he'd passed out. He'd passed out in the middle of an op and Delta was gone but- He lifted a hand up to rub the seam of his suit, just under the chest plate. Where he'd been shot. Pressed down hard and felt the ache of an injury and ran the most recent data from the healing unit as soon as he hauled his helmet back on.

Patient Dead. Cause: GSW & Exsanguination. Recovery Beacon: Active.

And Delta gone. He cracked his helmet off a second time to get that text away from him, threw the damn thing across the room (Like South when she was pissed but he hasn't seen the twins in YEARS) and shoved himself into the farthest corner of the room. Listened to the happy little recording. Another war. Services needed. Fan FUCKING tastic. Is it any wonder he started to laugh?

Notes: York will be coming in post death and be a little twitchy till he settles. It won't help his controlling the teleportation magic thing at all. I'd also request his bum eye to not be fixed via healing magic.
